Introduction:

Open prostatectomy has been a distinctive part of urologic surgery as a gold standart treatment for BPH for more than 50 years and treated billions of patients suffering for BPH with excellent outcomes, since it had entered the literature at the very beginning of 20th century. In this article the role of this procedure which is nearly abondoned in the western world due to advances in endourology, is reviewed.

Materials and methods:

The current role of open prostatectomy in the world and in Turkey has been evaluated by searching the medline and retrieving the full articles as possible

Conclusion:

Due to the excellent long term outcomes of HoLEP and KTP laser procedures, especially on large prostates it is likely that, this procedure will be abondoned in the western world shortly. Similarly in Turkey, although the only endourologic alternative is TURP in most of the hospitals, the process will follow the western countries since its high morbidity and hospitalisation durations which is incomparable to endourologic procedures and the prices paid by government to prostate surgeries are similar that are revaled by health policy reports . When the endourologic experience of new urologists, which is much more superior than their open surgery experiences is added to the equation, it is not hard to say that, this special operation will be a historical procedure in the future.
