ABSTRACT

Western literature shows that more urologists prefer minimally invasive surgery, i.e laser evaporization, instead of transurethral resection of prostate for the treatment of benign prostatic neoplasia. Among them, “Green-Light” 80W potassium titatyl phosphate –KTP- laser vaporization has been the most popular one during the last decade. Its lack of effectiveness in large adenomas and its high costs have limited its usage in academic centers, leading to an insufficiency in randomized controlled trials. Here we tried to objectively state the evolution and pros and cons of KTP laser surgery. At the end, we came up with the result that KTP laser should be reserved for patients with high risk of haemorrage and high anaestetic risk. Transurethral resection is still the first choice for the remaining patient group.
