ABSTRACT
Appropriate use of nutritional support is significantly important to enhance recovery and to reduce morbidity after cystectomy. There is clear lack of standard measures of nutrition after cystectomy and thus various extent of nutritional approaches of which few are inadequate are being commenced in urologic practice. However several essential steps of nutrition regimes should be learned and be recommended after cystectomy. Short form of mechanical bowel preparation should be preferred with limited preoperative fasting. Analgesia via epidural catheter is a mainstay inoperative measures and should be routinely applied to all patients. Nasogastric tubes should be removed shortly after surgery. Flatus is not necessarily a sign of bowel function recovery, and thus early oral intake should be started with liquids at the beginning. Early postoperative provision of artificial nutrients both in the form of total parenteral and enteral nutrition has shown beneficial effects, and to be continued until patients tolerate regular diet.
