ABSTRACT

The International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) 2012 Vancouver consensus conference made recommendations on the classification, grading, prognostic parameters, handling and staging, and biomarkers of renal tumors. Tubulocystic renal cell carcinoma (RCC), acquired cystic disease associated RCC, clear cell (tubulo) papillary RCC, microphthalmia transcription factor family translocation RCC and hereditary leiomyomatosis RCC syndrome associated RCC were recognized as new tumor entities. Thyroid-like follicular RCC, succinate dehydrogenase B deficiency associated RCC and anaplastic lymphoma kinase translocation RCC were considered as emerging/provisional entities. Some modifications in existing renal tumor categories were also made. A new grading system called ISUP grading system was accepted. Tumor morphotype, sarcomatoid and rhabdoid differentiation, and tumor necrosis were identified as prognostic parameters for RCC. Consensus guidelines were formulated for specimen handling, and renal sinus invasion criteria were clarified. The role of diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in the diagnosis of renal tumors was also considered.
