ABSTRACT

Aim:

Increased detrusor pressure and low urine flow rate during voiding are seen in bladder outlet obstruction with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Urodynamic studies are used in both diagnosis and follow-up of patients. We aimed to evaluate the importance of urodinamic studies in pateints with bladder outlet obstruction and lower urinary tract symptoms according to BPH. We also aimed to evaluate the selection criteria of pateinst that should be evaluated with urodynamic studies in this review.

New findings:

We evaluated the conventional urodynamic studies as uroflowmetry, bladder filling cystometry and pressure-flow studies in this review. We also investigated the recent developments with easier and less invasive methods as bladder and detrusor wall thickness/weight, condom catheter method and penil cuff test for isovolumetric bladder pressure.

Conclusion:

Postvoiding residual urine volume and uroflowmetry are used widely in both diagnosis and follow-up of BPH. Unfortunately, cystometry and pressure-flow studies could be used to correct the diagnosis of patients before surgical treatments. Recently, the non-invasive urodynamic studies as bladder and detrusor wall thickness/weight, condom catheter method and penil cuff test could be used before the invasive urodynamic studies. The standardization of these tests still needs studies with high number of cases.
